Tiger Woods working on long road to recovery

Tiger Woods is out of hospital and recovering at home in Florida after his car crash, reports independent.ie.

Woods underwent surgery on open fractures to his lower right leg and further injuries to his foot and ankle following a single-vehicle crash in Los Angeles on February 23, and on Tuesday night the 15-time Major winner confirmed he had taken the next step in his rehabilitation.

“Happy to report that I am back home and continuing my recovery,” the 45-year-old said in a statement on his Twitter feed.

Woods added: “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks.

“Thank you to the incredible surgeons, doctors, nurses and staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. You have all taken such great care of me and I cannot thank you enough. I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger every day.”

Woods was the sole occupant in his SUV at around 7am on February 23 when the vehicle struck a median strip, rolled and came to a rest on its side near a steep road police say is notorious for crashes.

The 15-time Major champion had to be pulled out of the vehicle through the windshield.

The former number one was unconscious in a mangled SUV after he crashed the vehicle in Southern California last week, according to a court document that also revealed a nearby resident and not a sheriff’s deputy was first on the scene.

The witness, who lives near the accident scene in Rolling Hills Estates just outside Los Angeles, heard the crash and walked to the SUV, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Johann Schloegl wrote in the affidavit. The man told deputies that Woods had lost consciousness and did not respond to his questions.

The first deputy, Carlos Gonzalez, arrived minutes later the morning of February 23 and has said Woods appeared to be in shock but was conscious and able to answer basic questions. Woods suffered severe injuries to his right leg and cuts to his face.

Woods told deputies — both at the wreckage and later at the hospital — that he did not know how the crash occurred and didn’t remember driving, according to the affidavit. Meanwhile, investigations continue to ascertain the dynamics of the accident, a more than normal procedure even if Woods was driving alone and did not involve other vehicles in the accident: “We are trying to determine if a crime has been committed,” explained the Deputy of Sheriff John Schloegl.

“If someone is involved in a road accident, we need to reconstruct the collision, determine if there was reckless driving, if the driver was on a cell phone or if other offenses occurred. We need to determine if a crime has been committed.

“If there was no irregularity, we close the case and it was just a normal accident.”
