Over 200 houses have been reportedly destroyed by rainstorms in Ekiti State in the first two months of the year.
The General Manager, State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Jide Borode, who spoke in Ado Ekiti, said the disaster mainly affected four local government areas of the state.
He expressed shock at the effect of the rainstorms and the loss suffered by residents whose houses were destroyed.
Borode, however, noted that there was the need to be grateful to God as there was no report of death.
He listed the affected communities to include Ado metropolis, Emure, Ise and Erinjiyan, in the Ekiti West LGA of the state where he estimated the damage to run into hundreds of millions of naira.
Borode called on the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the victims, saying the effect of the damage was too massive to be left for the state government alone to handle.
He warned people in the state to avoid building houses in flood-prone areas, adding that the best period to acquire land was during the rainy season when flood prone-areas could be easily identified.
