Plateau United slash players’ salaries after poor NPFL start

The management of Plateau United says it has placed the entire team on half salaries following their poor start to the Nigeria Professional Football League, which resumed on Sunday.

Plateau United stated this in a statement signed by their media officer, Albert Dakup, on Monday.

The Jos-based club lost 2-0 to visiting Kwara United at the New Jos Stadium in their match-day one tie of the NPFL on Sunday.

General Manager of the club, Pius Henwan, while addressing the players and coaches on Monday, directed that the entire team be placed on half salaries.

“Plateau United is a big brand in Nigerian football and any of you who is not ready to defend the colours of the club should just bolt out,” Henwan was quoted as saying in the statement.

“Some of you are injured or sick since we returned from Tanzania but it seems others decided to exclude themselves from training under the guise of being injured. Such indiscipline will not be condoned here and anyone found wanting will be decisively dealt with.”

Henwan stated that the team must collect the three points in their next away match, adding that until that was done, the players would remain on half salaries.

He assured the head coach, Abdu Maikaba, that management would continue to give him the maximum support to enable him succeed.

On his part, Maikaba lamented the opening day defeat, saying he had given all the players a level-playing field to ensure they gave their best

He said, “I’ve been working hard to give all the players the chance to compete for places in the team. If some players accuse me of being biased, then the identity of such players should be revealed because they are the ones thwarting my efforts to change the fortunes of the team.”

Plateau travel to Bauchi to face Wikki Tourists at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in the week two of the NPFL fixtures on Sunday.
