Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has been nominated for the goalkeeper of the season in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa.
Akpeyi, 34, is up against Dennis Onyango of Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSports’ Ronnwen Williams for the award.
The Nigeria international kept 10 clean sheets and conceded 26 goals in 27 appearances last season for Kaizer Chiefs.
Onyango, 35, conceded 32 goals and kept 16 clean sheets in 39 appearances for Sundowns.
Williams, on his part, made 37 appearances and conceded 30 goals and kept 16 clean sheets.
Meanwhile, Akpeyi will miss Sunday’s opening game of the season – an MTN8 quarter-final clash with Maritzburg United.
That’s because of an administrative blunder, according to new coach Hunt.
“Daniel (Akpeyi) is not available on Sunday, his passport is expired, and it’s a bit of an admin problem. I think Khune might just make the team!”
Khune was left out of the side for much of last season by Ernst Middendorp, who was sacked after Amakhosi failed to win the Absa Premiership title on the final day of the campaign.
The former Bafana captain, now 33, however, did return to the side for the last two games of the season after Akpeyi picked up a concussion against Bidvest Wits.
